**Start with your training organisation’s syllabus, then give each study session one clear objective.** A list of subjects tells you what is ahead; a plan tells you what to do next.

## 1. Map the work before choosing the pace

Write down the subjects and learning objectives your course covers. Mark what you have studied, what needs another pass, and what is still unfamiliar. Confirm exam arrangements and deadlines with your training organisation or competent authority rather than assuming they are the same everywhere.

## 2. Give each session a specific question

“Study meteorology” is broad. “Explain why pressure falls with altitude” gives you a clearer endpoint. Read the relevant training material and try to explain the idea in your own words before practising questions.

## 3. Separate learning from checking

Use focused practice to find gaps in your understanding. Use a mock session when you want to answer without immediate correctness feedback. Both are useful, but they serve different purposes.

See [how ATPL’s study modes work](/features).

## 4. Keep a small error log

For an answer that needs review, record:

- The concept or learning objective.
- Why your reasoning did not work.
- What you will read or practise next.

Include correct answers that you guessed. A correct choice is not always evidence that you understand the underlying idea.

## 5. Schedule the return visit

Leave space in your plan to revisit earlier topics. At the end of a session, choose the next objective and note one thing to check again. Adjust your routine when the review shows that a topic needs more time.

## A simple session outline

| Stage | What to do |
| --------------- | -------------------------------------------------------- |
| Before practice | Choose an objective and review the relevant explanation. |
| During practice | Answer deliberately and notice where you are uncertain. |
| After practice | Review your reasoning and update your error log. |
| Next session | Revisit a difficult concept before adding new material. |
